Plan around Reader goals
Use names that match what Readers are trying to do, such as Get started, Manage your account, Policies, and Troubleshooting. Avoid internal department names unless Readers understand them.
Create a category
Open Content Manager and select the target knowledgebase.
Use New and choose Category.
Add a short name, URL slug, description, and appropriate icon.
Choose a parent only when the subcategory makes navigation clearer.
Save it, then place representative articles inside it.
Rename, nest and order categories
In Content Manager, inspect the category and use its edit controls to update its name, description or parent. Choose an existing parent deliberately and avoid circular or unnecessarily deep structures.
For manual ordering, use the supported drag or move controls in a compatible unfiltered view. Search, filters or a non-manual sort can make drag ordering unavailable; clear them before changing the order.
Reopen the authoring structure and check representative Reader navigation. Published article moves or category changes remain working-copy changes until those articles are republished; inspect the live destination separately.
Retire a category safely
Inspect its articles, children and incoming links before using the available archive or delete action. Move content and resolve children through the supported controls, read dependency warnings and confirm the resulting navigation. Do not assume category removal uses the article’s 30-day recovery window, or that it unpublishes every contained article for you.
Prefer five to seven top-level categories for a new portal.
Avoid empty categories and deep nesting.
Review the Reader sidebar after every structural change.
