Five things to know before you begin
Your data lives in your workspace. Makersite does not share your product data with other organisations. Each workspace is isolated.
Data must be imported before analysis begins. Makersite enriches and analyses the data you provide. The quality of your results depends on the completeness of your imported data.
Roles control what you can see and do. Your access level is set by your workspace administrator. If a menu item or feature is missing, check with your admin before contacting support.
Validation runs automatically on import. When you upload a file, Makersite validates it and flags issues before any data is written to your workspace. Review and resolve those flags before proceeding.
The platform is updated regularly. Check Release Notes to stay informed about new features, changes, and fixes.
Key concepts
Bill of Materials (BOM)
A BOM is a structured list of the components, materials, and sub-assemblies that make up a product. Makersite uses your BOM as the foundation for all environmental and compliance calculations.
Digital twin
A digital twin in Makersite is a data model that mirrors the structure and properties of your physical product. It lets you simulate changes — for example, swapping a component — and see the downstream impact on carbon footprint or compliance status without affecting the actual product.
Product carbon footprint (PCF)
The product carbon footprint is the total greenhouse gas emissions associated with a product across its lifecycle, expressed in kilograms of CO₂ equivalent (kg CO₂e). Makersite calculates the PCF from component data in your BOM combined with background lifecycle inventory data.
Primary data vs. secondary data
Primary data is information collected directly from your supply chain — for example, an energy consumption figure provided by a supplier. Secondary data is industry-average data sourced from lifecycle inventory databases. Primary data is preferred because it reflects your actual supply chain.
